In the east, the shorelines and the old capital city of Tavira are guarded by a series of offshore sand ‘ihlas’ which stretch to the regions main city (Faro) with its unique Old Town. Faro is where the regional airport is located and the road west takes you to the exclusive resorts of Vilamoura, Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago with their expensive villas and world class restaurants. Although these places are quite rightly famous for lots of people the great splendor of this area of the Algarve is found inland from these developments, where you journey past picturesque citrus orchards in a world of stunning villages embracing the hillsides with panoramic vistas over the shorelines and ocean.
